چکیده

Spectral indices are useful tools for quantifying the strengths of features in moderate-resolution spectra and relating them to intrinsic stellar parameters. This paper focuses on the 4300Å CH G-band, a classic example of a feature interpreted through use of spectral indices. G-band index definitions, as applied to globular clusters of different metallicity, abound in the literature, and transformations between the various systems, or comparisons between different authors’ work, are difficult and not always useful. We present a method for formulating an optimized G-band index, using a large grid of synthetic spectra. To make our new index a reliable measure of carbon abundance, we minimize its dependence on [N/Fe] and simultaneously maximize its sensitivity to [C/Fe]. We present a definition for the new index S2(CH), along with estimates of the errors inherent in using it for [C/Fe] determination, and conclude that it is valid for use with spectra of bright globular cluster red giants over a large range in [Fe/H], [C/Fe], and [N/Fe]. Deep Mixing and Metallicity: Carbon Depletion in Globular Cluster Giants

We present the results of an observational study of the efficiency of deep mixing in globular cluster red giants as a function of stellar metallicity. We determine [C/Fe] abundances based on low-resolution spectra taken with the Kast spectrograph on the 3m Shane telescope at Lick Observatory. Spectra centered on the 4300Å CH absorption band were taken for 42 bright red giants in 11 Galactic glo...

Cn Bimodality at Low Metallicity: the Globular Cluster M53

We present low resolution UV-blue spectroscopic observations of red giant stars in the globular cluster M53 ([Fe/H]= −1.84), obtained to study primordial abundance variations and deep mixing via the CN and CH absorption bands. The metallicity of M53 makes it an attractive target: a bimodal distribution of 3883 Å CN bandstrength is common in moderateand high-metallicity globular clusters ([Fe/H]...

DDO Photometry of M71: Carbon and Nitrogen Patterns Among Evolving Giants

We present V , B − V, and DDO C(41 − 42) and C(42 − 45) photometry for a sample of 75 red giants down to MV = +2 in the relatively metal-rich Galactic globular cluster M71. The C(41− 42) colors reveal a bimodal distribution of CN band strengths generally anticorrelated with CH band strength as measured by the C(42 − 45) color. Both DDO colors agree well with those found in 47 Tucanae – a nearby...

An analysis of the CN and CH band strengths measured in a large sample of M71 and M13 main sequence stars by Cohen (1999a,b) is undertaken using synthetic spectra to quantify the underlying C and N abundances. In the case of M71 it is found that the observed CN and CH band strengths are best matched by the identical C/N/O abundances which fit the bright giants, implying: 1) little if any mixing...

Gemini - Phoenix infrared high - resolution abundance analysis of five giants in the bulge globular cluster NGC 6553 ⋆

A detailed abundance analysis of 5 giants of the metal-rich bulge globular cluster NGC 6553 was carried out using high resolution infrared spectra in the H band, obtained at the Gemini-South 8m telescope. JK photometry collected at ESO and VI photometry from the Hubble Space Telescope are used to derive effective temperatures. The present analysis provides a metallicity [Fe/H] =-0.20±0.10. An o...
